Change with Less Pain
Q. What do we mean by “change management”?
A. Helping people to maintain excellent performance when faced with daily and future uncertainty.
Rapid and continual change is here to stay. The rate of change will continue to accelerate and the directions of change will become more extreme as our markets and customers demand more and better.
Undertaking great huge “strategic change management programmes” that turn the organisation upside down and investigate every nook and cranny often makes things worse – not better. We have to get to the grass roots and find out what is hindering people changing.
Getting people to change is an EMOTIONAL problem not a rational one. Most people can see the sense of change but they are afraid of it. They wonder if they will cope and how much effort will be needed. So it’s no use giving them models and charts and theories.
Strategy Improvers will help your people change by:
- Assisting the senior management team to prepare a clear statement of threats to survival and opportunities for growth and what really counts.
- Working with each department to find out what actually is hindering them changing.
- Asking people in a simple survey to give five concrete examples of what is stopping them changing.
- Holding discussions with each department/team to make explicit the change barriers and then getting participants to offer possible solutions.
- Preparing an agreed action plan.
- Monitoring over a three-month period with some fine-tuning to ensure the action plan is implemented.
RESULT?
People more willing and motivated to see changes as a challenge and not a threat and using more personal responsibility to identify future improvements and act on them. All with minimum fuss, no jargon and virtually no bureaucracy.
